In a classic science fiction story two ships at the edge of black hole interact with each other in strange and fascinating ways. In the year 2130 the spaceship USS Palomino has been sent to investigate a ship, the Cygnus, on the event horizon of a black hole. When they arrive they get in to some trouble with their ship and need some parts, this is when the Cygnus mysteriously comes to life. The crew of the Palomino: Dan Holland (Robert Forster), Charlie Pizer (Joseph Bottoms), Harry Booth (Ernest Borgnine), Dr. Alex Durant (Anthony Perkins), and Kate McCrae (Yvette Mimieux), along with V. I.N. CENT, their maintenance robot, must board the Cygnus if they hope to escape the black hole. On board the Cygnus they find Dr. Hans Reinhardt (Maximillian Schell), who went missing with the ship twenty years before. The crew of the Palomino discover some strange and interesting things once aboard the Cygnus, will they survive the encounter?
